Breaking Out of Traditional Classroom Learning: Using Breakout Boxes to Maximize Student Engagement
In this session, participants will learn how to use a teaching tool which facilities problem solving using collaboration, communication, as well as critical and creative thinking. Breakout Boxes can be compared to escape rooms which have students working on a series of questions that come directly from curriculum. Participants will learn how to construct this teaching strategy and then solve a “breakout” activity in a team.

Infusing Culturally Responsive Curriculum to meet the needs of Culturally Linguistically Economically Diverse Gifted students.
The purpose of this session is to provide teachers with a toolbox of Culturally Responsive Curriculum strategies and resources to reach all students. During the past three years, the Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) worked on several strategies to close gaps within the school division. The division created a task force and consulted experts in the field.

Attendees will expand their knowledge on social-emotional learning and how it is defined in VBCPS. Researched-based evidence will be discussed to understand the why behind building positive relationships between teacher and student. Participants will engage in relationship-building activities that they can modify to fit the needs of their classroom.
